FAQ

Am I “in-boundary” for Oyster-Adams?

To determine if you are in the Oyster-Adams boundary, please refer to the DCPS website. Families who live within the Oyster-Adams may enroll their children at any time during the school year. Any child living in-boundary is guaranteed placement in kindergarten and first grade. It is recommended that children enter the dual-language program no later than first grade so that they can build language skills in the early grades. Therefore, Oyster-Adams generally does not accept out-of-boundary students who are not at or near grade level in Spanish after first grade.

Families who live out of boundary, or those seeking placement in Pre-Kindergarten, may apply through the DCPS Lottery System.

What is an acceptable proof of residency?

Families must provide proof of residency when completing the enrollment packet.

Only one item is needed if you supply a pay stub, documentation of financial assistance, certified copy of Form D40, military housing orders, or an embassy letter. Learn more here.

Which health forms are required?

All students must turn in DC Universal Health and Oral Health Assessment forms each year.

Health forms must be completed by your student(s) health care providers (typically their pediatrician and their dentist) and submitted by their guardian online through the DCPS website.

DC Universal Health, which includes certification of immunizations, and Oral Health Assessment forms are due by the first day of school; however, you may enroll before the forms are completed.

Learn more about the forms and submission here. For an FAQ about immunization requirements, click here.

What is the birthday cut-off?

All children must be age-appropriate for their respective grade on or before September 30, 2023. For example: a child must be 5 years old on or before September 30, 2023 to enter Kindergarten.

A child must be 4 years old on or before September 30 to enter Pre-Kindergarten.

How do we enroll in Pre-Kindergarten?

Pre-K attendance is not compulsory in Washington, DC. DCPS does not guarantee spots in schools for all students. Oyster-Adams uses the DCPS Lottery System to allocate most available Pre-K spots to Spanish dominant children. All interested students, no matter where they live, must enter the Pre-K lottery to obtain a Pre-K spot at Oyster-Adams. To apply for the Pre-K lottery, please use the DCPS Lottery System. All students must be 4 years old on or before September 30th to enter Pre-Kindergarten.
